Balla coi lupi narra
la storia di un ufficiale dell'Union Army, il Tenente John Dunbar, di stanza in Tennessee. Egli, dopo un tentativo di
suicidio scambiato per atto d'eroismo, viene 

mitizzato e detiene la scelta del luogo in cui operare: chiede,
così, di essere inviato in un lontano presidio di frontiera, ai margini delle praterie del Texas.

Arrivato
a Fort Heys, Dunbar viene spedito dal folle comandante del presidio, il Maggiore Fambrouogh, nell'avamposto più
remoto di tutti, chiamato Fort Sedgewick. Accompagnato dal rozzo 

mulattiere Timmons raggiunge la base, ma la
trova ormai abbandonata. Dopo aver scaricato i viveri dal carro, Timmons ritorna a Fort Heys, mentre Dunbar vi si
stabilisce. Il primo mese 

passa tra i lavori per ripristinare l'operatività dell'avamposto, con la sola
compagnia del cavallo Cisko, di un lupo (da lui chiamato affettuosamente Due Calzini) e del suo diario, nel 

quale annota tutto quello che vede e che gli succede. L'incontro con la vicina tribù di indiani Sioux, in lotta con
la confinante tribù dei Pawnee, porterà un senso nuovo alla sua 

vita...........

Storiline:

Lt. John Dunbar is dubbed a hero after he accidentally
leads Union troops to a victory during the Civil War. He requests a position on the western frontier, but finds it
deserted. He soon 

finds out he is not alone, but meets a wolf he dubs "Two-socks" and a curious Indian
tribe. Dunbar quickly makes friends with the tribe, and discovers a white woman who was raised by the 

Indians. He gradually earns the respect of these native people, and sheds his white-man's ways.....................
